Thermographic Infrared Electrical Inspection Survey – Apex Electric, LLC

Infrared Electrical Inspection

The objective of infrared electrical inspection (thermographic survey) is to survey designated electrical equipment to identify defective components and higher temperatures within your power distribution system. If undetected or untreated by an electrical system thermographic infrared survey these “hot spots” can cause fire, explosion, equipment failure, or electrical service interruption.

Thermal hot spots are typically caused by unbalanced or overloaded electrical circuits, loose connections, or broken equipment. These conditions are often unnoticed during routine preventative maintenance of facilities and will result in the release of heat that is only visible through infrared thermal imaging inspections.

Benefits

A typical electrical infrared inspection can net a savings from $10,000 to $20,000, depending on the number and severity of abnormalities found. In addition to the direct financial savings, valuable down time is saved by incorporating an annual infrared electrical inspection into your preventative maintenance program. Providing accurate information regarding the integrity of your electrical mechanical system’s components can lower maintenance costs and time, prevent costly repairs, and can eliminate unplanned outages and downtime.

Infrared thermography electrical inspections can:

  • Preserve the integrity of your facility’s electrical systems
  • Decrease electrical safety hazards
  • Detect damaged connections/overloaded circuits
  • Provide a view of the condition of your mechanical systems, motors, bearings, etc.
  • Preventative or predictive maintenance programs save money by reducing:
  • Pre-mature equipment failure
  • Emergency overtime
  • Overnight shipment of parts
  • Increased insurance premiums (many insurance companies give discounts for performing regular infrared inspections)
  • Unplanned downtime

Work Process

Our highly-trained thermographers will identify electrical and mechanical problems that cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as loose connections, faulty breakers, disconnects, overloaded circuits, unbalanced loads, weak motor windings and bearings, and more. Thermal imaging of potential problems are completed using modern thermal imaging cameras. During the infrared electrical inspection service, our team will generally inspect the following equipment, but can provide inspection and imaging on any mechanical or electrical components according to your specification.

  • Switch Gear
  • Transformers
  • Service Disconnects
  • Transfer Switches
  • Bus Runs
  • Motors / Pumps / Bearings
  • Lighting / Heating Contactors
  • Motor Control Panels
  • Electrical Panels
  • Starters
  • UPS Equipment
  • Chillers and Roof Top HVAC Equipment
  • VFDs

Deliverables

Our electrical infrared reports are concise, making the thermal anomaly location easy to determine and facilitate repairs. Your report will include a detailed easy-to-read inspection report including:

  • Complete list of equipment inspected
  • Written narrative of the survey
  • Report form for every abnormality detected during the inspection.
  • Digital visible light photograph & color thermogram (infrared) picture
  • Severity category of problem
  • Potential cause of problem
  • Physical location of problem
  • Problem area temperatures

Thermographers scan power systems using advanced infrared cameras for any issues that could lead to failures or damages in the future.

These infrared scanning images will help to determine any hot spots, loose connections, weak components, or other issues that could lead to pricey repair costs and increased risk if they go unfixed.

A typical infrared electrical inspection will check some or all of the following systems for potential issues:

  • Switch Gear
  • Transformers
  • Service Disconnects
  • Transfer Switches
  • Bus Runs
  • Pumps and Bearings
  • Lighting Contactor
  • Heating Contactor
  • Motor Control Centers
  • Circuit Breaker Panels
  • Starter motors
  • Uninterruptible Power Supply
  • Chiller and HVAC Equipment
  • Variable-Frequency Drives

Our thermal cameras are used for infrared inspection to identify any problem areas in electrical equipment before they lead to major issues.

Not only does electrical equipment maintenance ensure a safe workspace, but it can also save your company money in expensive repair costs.

An infrared thermography inspection can quickly determine any equipment that could suffer from high resistance, loose connections, or faulty components. Early detection of these issues is always preferable to prevent major damage.

Over recent years, electrical systems have become increasingly safe and reliable. This has not reduced the need for electrical inspection services.

All electrical systems require a stable and strong connection to carry the arc of electricity on a safe and secure path. Even the most trusted and solid connections can shift to be disconnected or decline in condition leading to a potentially dangerous and costly disconnect.

Thermal imaging can draw attention to these weak connections before any big issues arise, keeping your workplace safe and operating as efficiently as possible.

Seemingly small electrical problems can quickly lead to fires, explosions, chemical leakages, and other costly issues.

Any business will want to strive to ensure that this does not happen to them, and the easiest way to do this is to have regular electrical infrared inspections.
