At times, the National Electrical Code makes updates and changes to its editions, to ensure the safety and quality of all residential, commercial, and industrial places. To help you understand the most recent changes, we have created a breakdown of the updates for 2023.

What Changes Occurred?

There are various changes in the National Electrical Code including changes to residential, commercial, and industrial systems. Additionally, there are also changes to the management and equipment that is used to provide electrical services.

For residential electrical services, changes have been made to address the ground-fault circuit interrupters for certain appliances, emergency disconnects, and circuits. Be sure to check the updated code to gather the details about these changes.

For commercial and industrial electrical services, there are now requirements that need to be followed for the use of “replacement panelboards” and arc-fault circuit interrupter protection. Additionally, disconnecting things using double-ended lamps, including LED type and others, have also been included, so be sure to check the updated code before performing such commercial electrical services

The interconnection of on-site power supplies with utility supplies is also addressed, as well as the delineation between the battery, emergency storage, and electric systems.

One of the biggest changes is the addition of systems and equipment that have never been covered before in the code. For example, 4 faults managed circuits and hazardous locations in commercial and industrial facilities that produce cannabis are two of the additions that have occurred in the code. To attain an understanding of the other additions, you can review the updated code.

For those that enjoy looking up definitions efficiently, you will be happy to hear that there is now a section for definitions within the National Electrical Code. The definitions can all be found in the Article 100 section, making it easy to find a definition for words that you might be struggling to understand.

Aside from additions, there were also changes made to things that are no longer required. For example, the receptacle outlets on kitchen islands and peninsulas are no longer required in dwelling units. This is a big change because before the change, electricians were required to install one outlet for every nine square feet of the island, and another outlet for every 18 feet after. Again, be sure to read the code to understand the details and how it might pertain to you in your upcoming projects.
